National Trust & English Heritage

When the border feuding and fighting ended the landowners such as the Duke of Northumberland at Alnwick rebuilt their castles and estates. The  Middleton family at Belsay and Lord Armstrong at Cragside built new dwellings on their family estates. Many of these houses and more are maintained by the English Heritage & National Trust who have them open to visitors.

Belsay Hall

Belsay Hall a remarkable estate with castle and manor house and hall which designed by the Newcastle architect, John Dobson. It is maintained by English Heritage and a walk in the grounds and gardens through the quarry to the castle ruins is memorable.

Cragside

Cragside a Victorian house situated in 900 acres built by industrialist Lord Armstrong as a home and a place to test his engineering theories, hence the house was the first in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity. It is now a showcase of Victorian art architecture and technology. Open year round except Mondays and also Tuesdays in the winter, maintained by the National Trust there is a Tea Shop, Gift Store and acres to walk and enjoy, ideal place for a picnic lunch.

 Lady Waterford Hall

Lady Waterford Hall Ford Village near Wooler is a 19th century village school decorated with biblical murals by Louisa who at the time was Marchioness of Waterford, with the faces are of villagers from the Ford and Etal estate.

Seaton Deleval Hall

Seaton Deleval Hall north of Whitley Bay is an English baroque house which was rebuilt following a fire in 1822 by the architect Sir John Vanbrugh, renowned for Castle Howard in Yorkshire.

Wallington Hall

Wallington Hall in the hands of the National Trust is a 17th Century mansion, home of the Trevelyan family, fully furnished with murals by William Bell Scott, depicting the history of Northumberland. There is also a fine collection of dolls houses and a recently rebuilt walled garden to stroll around at your leisure with tea room and gift shop.
